Normally Bennison's delivers, but on my birthday, they gave me a cake that cracked down the middle before my big event and never gave me the candles for it. I didn't even get a refund for the candles and I spent $5 on them! My sister had to buy and bring me candles instead! What a disappointment!

Bennison's sells day-old goods, pretending they are fresh. I was hosting a tea party bridal shower and ordered - in advance - fresh scones and several loaves of bread to make the sandwiches. First, when I arrived for a pre-arranged pick-up I was told they did not have all the scones I had ordered, and had only a few (3-6) of each type available. They had previously told me that each batch made in store produces several dozen scones; they had been open for less than an hour, meaning they could not possibly have sold out. The only possible explanation was that they were selling me day-old scones. I had no choice but to take them, and so I took what was available. Next, I checked the bread order, and discovered, again, they could not produce the types of loaves they'd promised. The clerk said, "Oh yeah, there's a note about that. " A note that she had not told me about! Thank goodness I checked the order. I ended up going to Whole Foods to get what Bennison's could not provide. When I got home it became obvious that the Bennison's bread was as day-old as the scones - stale and dry - whereas the Whole Foods bread was fresh and lovely. To anyone who hasn't tried the Palmier... what are you waiting for? Such a rich buttery flavor, like your favorite holiday butter cookies, with a sweet tasty crunch!

A true Evanston staple. Bennison’s has been around for almost a century and has stayed true to its family-owned practices. The interior is small, but the bakery items are not. You’ll be treated to the fresh scent of bread, butter, coffee, and rich caramelization as soon as you walk through the doors marked by their bright neon sign. It’ll be hard to hold yourself back from choosing an item on every shelf. They have everything from croissants to cookies, macarons, donuts, Danishes, and more. You can also order online to pick up your order, but even when it’s busy, their ordering process is quick and efficient. Everything is freshly baked with love and attention. You can’t go wrong with their donuts and Danishes, but I still have so many other pastries to try. If you’re around for Fat Thursday season, you’ll be lucky enough to taste their famous pączkis. I tried a raspberry one, which was stuffed with an insane amount of raspberry jelly and so delicious. Another one of my favorites is their massive apple fritter; it’s apples and dough deep fried and covered in crispy glaze. What more could you ask for? Went on a Saturday morning. Place was packed and there was nowhere to sit. Staff trying to herd people through. Stated to set an understanding of the vibe. If you don't like pressure or a little stress ordering, go somewhere with table service. We had Paczkis and Croissants. The apricot and jalapeno+everything were stunningly good both as concepts and as end results. Well worth the experience of trying to find a warm place to eat them.
